14 – 19 luglio 2023
Provence and Camargue: a journey through lavender, art cities and evocative landscapes.
14 – 19 July 2023
A trip to Provence had been on my wish list for years, waiting to come true! And I finally got the opportunity, as a gift for my fiftieth birthday! This land, precisely called the Provence – Alpes – Côte d’Azur region, is located in the south of France. One of the main reasons I was attracted to it is the lavender blooms, which has made it famous. But this is also the land of artists such as Van Gogh and Cézanne and of picturesque retro villages. And you can’t miss a visit to the charming landscapes of the Camargue and Roussillon.
I chose an organized tour, not knowing the area and not speaking any French. Considering the length of the coach journey, I opted for an agency that offered a six-day trip.
14 July: full travelling day from Italy to France, and arrival in the town of Pertuis at dinner time.
Colori e profumi di lavanda a Valensole – Colours and scents of lavender in Valensole.
15 July : My wish to see the lavender fields was fulfilled immediately, as that was our first stop. The Valensole plateau, 500 metres above sea level, is well known for the cultivation of lavender. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to see the flowering, which usually starts in June and ends around mid-July. Instead, thanks to the lower than average temperatures of the previous months, it happened late! So I was able to enjoy these endless violet expanses in all their beauty and their strong scent, and more.

Fields of sunflowers were next to lavender, in a beautiful combination of colours, made even brighter by the blinding sun. I can’t tell you how many photos! All this with the loud song of the cicadas. Fortunately, the climate in these areas is warm but dry, as lavender does not like humidity. We also visited a distillery, where we learnt about the cultivation, harvesting and distillation of lavender.
Aix-en-Provence: la città elegante di Cézanne – Aix-en-Provence: the elegant city of Cézanne.
In the afternoon we visited Aix-en-Provence, one of the major towns in Provence. It is elegant with pastel-coloured buildings, lively with its cafés and craft shops which can be found almost everywhere in the small squares and alleys of the centre. Rhombus-shaped calissons, almond paste biscuits covered with white icing, are typical here .

Cours Mirabeau divides the new town from the old town and is adorned with many fountains, often covered in moss. Walking along the street we stopped at the Les Deux Garҁons café to read the signatures of all the artists, film actors and other illustrious people who used to go this place in the past.
Aix-en-Provence is the birthplace of Paul Cézanne, a 19th century impressionist painter. It is possible to visit his workroom, just outside the city. Here, in silence and light, he retired in the last years of his life to portray beautiful views of Provence. His favourite was Mount Sainte Victoire, located on the outskirts of the city, which we saw several times during our coach journeys.
16 July : The day began at Pont du Gard, a majestic three-level Roman aqueduct built in the 1st century. With its 50 metres of height and its 35 arches, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and shows the ancient Romans’ great engineering skills. Being early in the morning there were still few tourists, so we were also able to walk along the Gardon river, which flows under the aqueduct. You can also visit a museum and watch a documentary to find out more about the design and creation of this work.

Pont du Gard è uno dei tanti siti risalenti all’epoca dell’Impero Romano, ne abbiamo poi visti altre nelle visite successive.
Pont du Gard is one of the many sites dating back to the time of the Roman Empire, we saw other ones on the following visits. The name Provence dates back to that time and means province: it was in fact one of the most important provinces of the Empire.
L’atmosfera vivace di Avignone, la città dei Papi – The lively atmosphere of Avignon, the city of the Popes.
We moved to Avignon, where the guide was waiting for us for the visit to the Popes’ Palace. This Gothic style building is somewhat of a symbol of the city. While we were walking to the centre we glimpsed beautiful views of its towers, spiers and battlements, which already gave an idea of its grandeur. It was in fact a real fortress, home of the popes who succeeded one another and reigned here for a century until the schism in 1377. After having been enlarged and modified several times, it’s now made up of two buildings, the Old Palace and the New Palace, as well as courtyards, cloisters and chapels.

A combined ticket allows you to visit the Saint-Bénezet Bridge, another symbol of the city. Seeing it, we immediately hummed the famous song that celebrates it “Sur le pont d’Avignon”. It once connected Avignon to Villeneuve, today only part of it remains, due to the manys floods of the Rhone river.
Avignon, considered the “capital” of Provence, is called the Popes’ city. Thanks to them, in fact, it became, and still is today, an important cultural and artistic centre. The Avignon Festival was taking place right now, a theatrical event that takes place in July. As well as lots of tourists, street artists were entertaining the city centre, in such a good and joyful feel. The heart is Place de l’Horloge, which takes its name from the clock on top of the Town Hall, and which is overlooked by many cafés and the Opera building. Lots of picturesque alleys branch off from here.

Rue des Teinturiers is the artists’ street; a crowd of people was strolling around the stalls, theatres and craft shops. It’s flanked by The Sorgue watercourse, and there are still wooden paddle wheels that in the past powered the workshops and factories.
Saint Remy e Les Baux- de- Provence: due piccoli borghi ricchi di storia – Saint Remy and Les Baux- de- Provence: two small villages rich in history.

In the afternoon we stopped for a short break in Saint Remy. The guide immediately took us to a narrow alley and stopped in front of a green door. Astrologer and doctor Nostradamus was born here in 1503 and became known all over the world mainly for his prophecies. Queen Caterina de’ Medici, wife of the French king Henry II of Valois, called him to her court in Paris to receive advice and horoscopes on the future heirs of the dynasty. If you want to find out more about his divinatory skills, as well as his scientific studies to eradicate the plague, you can visit the Nostradamus Museum in Salon-de-Provence. In this town he spent his life with his family and died in 1566.

Not far from Saint Remy is the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatric asylum, where the Dutch painter Van Gogh was hospitalized between 1889 and 1890. From here he was able to admire the surrounding landscape, made up of olive trees, cypresses, wheat and irises fields, and the Les Alpilles mountain range, which inspired numerous works. Reading the quotes on panels and seeing the reproductions of his drawings, we immersed ourselves in his world and were able to contemplate nature through his eyes and his state of mind.
Opposite the road, a little further on, the remains of a triumphal arch and a mausoleum ( Iuliis’ Mausoleum) are evidence of the ancient Roman town of Glanum. We spent just a little while here, but you can visit the whole site, rediscovered by excavations at the beginning of the 20th century, to get an idea of what the town looked like.

It was a busy day indeed, also due to the rather high temperatures, which ended at Les Baux-de-Provence, in the Les Alpilles Regional Natural Park. On our way we could see from the coach windows this village perched on a rocky spur. We went up straight to visit Saint Vincent’s Romanesque church, carved into the rock. Going further up you can visit the remains of the castle, or stay in the centre and walk in the narrow lanes, around stone houses, small shops and museums. I chose to see the Santons Museum, a collection of typical Provençal statuettes, from the 17th century to the present times, used for local nativity scenes.
Strolling through Arles, the city of Van Gogh with its slightly retro charm
17 July : today we headed south to Arles. We stopped here for a short time, but I was fascinated by this town so much linked with history and art. It is rich in places dating back to Roman domination, as a theatre, a cryptoporticus and a necropolis.

The emblematic oval-shaped amphitheatre is a small Colosseum that stands out with its white rock. Just like in ancient Rome, gladiator fights once took place here too, while today there are shows and bullfights. Arles is also the city of Van Gogh and inspired some of his works, such as Sunflowers and Starry Night over the Rhone. Café Van Gogh in the Place du Forum is where the artist used to go, it was also portrayed in the painting Café at Night. The narrow, quiet alleys, the pastel‑colored buildings, and the little shops and retro cafés gave me a delightful feeling. I wished I could have spent more time in this small town, which turned out to be one of the most memorable stops of this trip.
I paesaggi selvaggi ed i borghi della Camargue – The wild landscapes and the villages of the Camargue

Then we set off for the Camargue regional natural park, located in the Rhône delta, between the two arms of the river and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s still in the Provence-Alps-Côte d’Azur region, but the panorama is definitely different from what we had seen so far. During the journey the guide promised us that we would see the typical animals of the area: flamingos, bulls and white horses in the wild. So it was, but the most beautiful thing was seeing them in a huge area of prairies, reeds and marshland. Some large expanses of land with dark ground and low vegetation look like a desert. It was pleasant, yet strange, to feel the soft ground under your feet, like walking on a carpet! A really charming and unusual landscape!

The main town is Saintes Maries de la mer, a renowned, lively seaside resort, with narrow lanes full of shops and markets. In the church there are the Maries who give their name to the town, Mary Salome and Mary of Jacob. They are depicted on a boat on which, according to legend, they reached the French coast after the crucifixion of Jesus. In the crypt a statue of their servant Sara the Black, patroness of the gypsies, is kept.
From the centre of town you can quickly walk to the wide, sandy beach. So bad that we didn’t have a swimsuit for a lovely swim, but we still cooled off our feet in the water: in fact, the seabed here is shallow. If you want to buy something typical of the area I recommend a pack of red rice or some salt (you can also find it mixed with herbs and it is mainly a delicious seasoning for vegetables). The Camargue is actually rich in rice fields and salt pans.

At Aigues Mortes you can see pink-coloured salt pans, due to the presence of algae, and mountains of salt, which is collected manually in tons every year. The town with medieval features is small, in contrast to the imposing surrounding walls. The bastions were built in the 13th century to protect it from external incursions, they can be explored on foot and offer beautiful views from above.
On the way back we stopped in Nimes, near the Pont du Gard. We took a short tour through the streets of the centre of this elegant and lively town, called French Rome.

The Arena is iconic here, too, an imposing Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century AD, used at the time for gladiatorial shows and still now home to shows and bullfights. In front of it a statue celebrates the bullfighter Nimeno II, who committed suicide following an accident during a bullfight. The Maison Carrée is a majestic temple of white limestone, surrounded by Corinthian columns, once located in the centre of the city’s Forum. A crocodile chained to a palm tree also symbolizes the origins of Nimes: the city was at first a Roman colony founded by legionaries who fought with Caesar in the Egyptian campaign.
18 July : this morning we left early again to go to the Senanque Abbey. This Cistercian monastery founded in 1148 is still home to a community that follows Saint Benedict’s Rule. Exploring the abbey places- the cloister, the church, the chapter house, the dormitory – you can realize the way monks lived in the past and still live at present times.

The abbey is nestled in a quiet landscape designed to encourage prayer and work, and even today the monks produce honey, lavender, and other handcrafted goods following centuries‑old traditions. The white stone of the building, the lilac of the lavender, and the green of the surrounding vegetation create such a harmonious composition that it truly looks like a postcard. And needless to say, we couldn’t resist capturing the place in countless photos! The Abbey of Sénanque is definitely one of those stops that shouldn’t be missed on a trip to Provence, both for its cultural significance and its breathtaking scenery. tra Fate e Giganti nel Roussillon
Tra le Fate e i Giganti del Roussillon – Among the Fairies and Giants of Roussillon.
In the afternoon we went to Roussillon, a village in the Luberon region. The Ochre Trail starts from here, a truly unique place, perhaps the one that struck me most on this trip. In this area there was once a quarry where ochre was extracted.
The rocks have colours ranging from red, to orange, to yellow, and, over time and due to atmospheric agents, they have acquired curious shapes. After going down a staircase, the route begins. You walk on coloured dust (it’s there due to the erosion of the rocks) as soft as sand. The guide had recommended us to wear practical and washable shoes and clothes as they get easily dirty with this dust.

Then we walked into the Fairy Valley and around the cliffs of the Giants, where the bright colours of the rocks beautifully contrast with the green vegetation. We walked all the way with the song of the cicadas, and it was very hot. Some people of the group took the shorter half-hour tour, while other people and I chose the one-hour tour. It was an ultimate must-do experience. At the end we walked around the streets of the village for a bit, where the predominant colour of the buildings is red.
19 July : time to return to Italy, pleased with seeing so many things, which we will keep in our eyes and hearts.
